Coping With Acid Reflux: What You Must Know

Do you know someone that does or do you yourself have acid reflux? If so, you have experienced the pain acid reflux causes. Acid reflux is a condition that can be difficult to live with. However, you can help yourself feel better by following the advice included here.

You want to do most of your drinking between meals and not while you're eating. This will help you manage hunger, as it is likely that you are more thirsty than you are hungry. Additionally, if you drink separately from eating you will find that you don't suffer from bloating and acid reflux as much.

Stop smoking! Acid reflux can be caused or worsened by the use of cigarettes or cigars. Smoking reduces the production of saliva and slows down digestion, causing stomach acids to increase. The esophagus becomes weak when you light up too. End the habit for good now.

Acid reflux can be triggered with some foods. Caffeine based foods, chocolate, and even fried foods are common culprits. Additionally, citrus fruit, tomatoes and other foods with a high level of acidity can cause problems. The triggers are different for everyone, and you need to sort out which ones are yours. Try avoiding these things to feel better.

Always eat each meal slowly. Instead of stuffing yourself, eat until you are not quite full. Sit down while you eat and take time to actually enjoy your meal. If you consume your food quickly or you eat too much, acid reflux can be exacerbated. Avoid distractions that will keep you from realizing your are full, and take breaks in between courses.

Increase the amount of upright exercises that you perform, such as walking. These types of exercise benefit your body by preventing reflux. First, staying upright helps your stomach digest food more easily. Second, it can reduce your weight, which also improves acid reflux. Exercising may help with your acid reflux; however, intense exercising can actually worsen your symptoms.

Pregnant women can get acid reflux because of the baby pressing against the stomach; this results in the formation of acid reflux. Speak to a doctor to see what to do about it if this is what you have, especially later in the pregnancy.

The tendency of a particular food to form acid when digested has little correlation with the initial pH of that food. Acidic foods like lemons are very alkaline after they are digested. This can confuse those who deal with acid reflux. Find out more about the actual pH of the foods you usually eat to figure out which ones you should stay away from.

Make it a point to relax whenever possible. Eating while stressed can increase the amount of acid in your stomach. You should do some meditation or relaxation exercises after eating a meal. Avoid laying down immediately after a meal; sit upright instead.

Now, if you experience acid reflux in the future, you will know what to do. In the past, you simply had to cope with pain and wish for it to disappear. Since reading these tips, you can take action. By putting this advice to work for you, you can permanently eliminate your acid reflux.
